Transforming Stockport: Flooring Solutions for an Award-Winning Transport Hub and Residential Development

Objective

The Stockport Interchange project was designed to revitalise the town centre by combining a state-of-the-art bus terminal with a residential development. The goal was to create a sustainable, well-connected transport hub that also addresses the local housing shortage, enhancing accessibility and quality of life in the area. Our task was to provide durable, high-performance flooring solutions suitable for both the high-traffic public areas of the bus station and the residential apartments.

Approach

To fulfil the project’s diverse flooring requirements, we implemented a variety of tailored solutions that ensured durability, safety, and aesthetics, aligning with the project’s objectives of sustainability and community impact.

Learn More

For the residential apartments, we installed luxury vinyl tile (LVT) and carpet tiles, chosen for their combination of comfort, durability, and ease of maintenance. LVT provided a resilient, easy-to-clean surface ideal for everyday use, while carpet tiles in communal corridors offered acoustic benefits and a welcoming feel. To ensure a flawless finish, we applied a damp-proof membrane (DPM) and latex screed as a foundation, creating a smooth and durable base.

In the bus terminal, a 4mm heavy-duty epoxy quartz resin screed with a protective seal coat was installed to withstand the high traffic and heavy use typical of a busy transport hub. This resin screed was selected for its excellent impact resistance and moderate chemical resistance, making it ideal for both durability and ease of maintenance. For areas where slip resistance was a concern, a slip-resistant variant was used, incorporating a specialized seal coat to enhance safety. The inclusion of wayfinding routes formed in an alternate resin colour made traversing from the information hubs to the transport mode made navigation around the terminal much easier.

To reduce structural movement and reflective cracking and ensure the stability of the flooring, we installed movement joints over inducement joints, accommodating structural shifts and preserving the integrity of the flooring system in high-traffic areas. This proactive approach was critical in maintaining the long-term durability of the floors under the heavy use conditions expected in a transport hub.

In addition to our primary work, we made a charitable contribution to the local community by supplying and installing vinyl flooring in an accessible toilet at the Webb Lane Allotments’ potting shed. This initiative was part of our commitment to enhancing local facilities and supporting community well-being.

The completed Stockport Interchange is now a vital part of the town’s infrastructure, combining efficient transport services with modern residential living. Through our tailored flooring solutions and commitment to quality, we contributed to a project that enhances connectivity, supports sustainable urban development, and serves the community’s needs.
